Capitol Records Sued Over Ice Cube Song From 1990

Capitol Records is being sued over the Ice Cube song "Jackin' For Beats" from Cube's Kill At Will EP from 1990. What a minute...the song is called JACKIN FOR BEATS! How you gonna sue after you get straight robbed? That's not hood.

According to TMZ.com, Flo & Eddie, two members of the group The Turtles, have filed a lawsuit against Capitol Records. The duo claim that their 1972 song "Buzzsaw" was sampled in Ice Cube's "Jackin' For Beats." Prior to the recording of "Jackin' For Beats", a deal was signed for the derivative song but Flo & Eddie claim Capitol went beyond the agreement to make more money. The duo wants a minimum judgement of $25,000 but no more than $70,000.

What's funny about this story, is that "Flo," who is the founder father of the Turtles, is actually my old professor from my Music Business & Industry course in college. He has also been involved in lawsuits against D-Nice and De La Soul over the use of sampling.

Anyway, the sample is the first beat in the Cube song. You'll recognize it, it's been used a million times.

And here's the original: The Turtles - "Buzzsaw"

"Stop fool. come off that beat, ya'll"
