Tupac Shakur: The Lost Footage

It's been 13 years since 2Pac died on the 13th day of September 1996, yet the void he left in hip-hop--let alone black culture--is gaping, For his anniversary, VIBE revives the fallen icon, if just for a couple minutes, with the first in a series of previously unreleased interview footage from May '96. As he discusses a unified rap nation and where he'd be in 2016, and in Part 2 he speaks on his issues with Biggie Smalls. Pac is everything we remember: Candid, passionate, prophetic. Rest in peace, Tupac Amaru Shakur.

GOODIE MOB - "BLACK ICE"

Sky high!

I can't wait for this Goodie Mob reunion. Those dudes were originators. This is my favorite Goodie song of all time. Andre 3000 absolutely kills his verse.

"they steady move them keys like Bob James" (c) Andre

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: KRS-One & Buckshot

Please forgive me. This is a week late. I'm trying to play ketchup.

What can I say that hasn't already by said about KRS-One? Dude is a legend. He's the Teacher. And one hell of an interview. Buckshot is a legend in his own right. He's be a part of numerous classic records and along with Dru Ha started the infamous Duck Down Records. The two team up to dropa an album together called Survival Skills this upcoming Tuesday. It's gonna be pure hip-hop. You're probably gonna like it...but don't take my word for it, listen to KRS and Buck tell it...

This is dope. Del and Tame One are teaming up for a new album together. I didn't know that. You probably didn't either, but that's why you come to us. Anyway, the album, Parallel Uni-Verses, will be out October 13th on Gold Dust. I imagine it's gonna be dope, but these cats are both on some other shit. In fact, I can't figure out who's more spaced out. Imagine the narcotics that were consumed making this album.

THROWBACK THURSDAYS.

We had to get some real professionals for the job, son.

Smif-N-Wessun x Raekwon = Classick. I remember when I first heard this joint back in 1998, I was blown away. Two of my favorite rap conglomerates, Boot Camp Clik and The mighty Wu-Tang Clan on the same track? Now that's what I call a good idea, son. Blazin through.

The Making of Only Built For Cuban Linx 2

Wu-Tang is for the children. And Raekwon is for the people. He made this album for you. It may have been a long time coming, but all good Chefs know that you can't rush a gourmet meal. It takes time, planning, and careful preparation. And of course, sometimes you have to put out a few fires...

The Chef lets you in on the trials and tribulations surrounding the long awaited, often delayed new album, Only Built For Cuban Linx PT. 2. Rae also admits he made this album for the people, because that's what they asked for. In fact, he goes on to say that artists need to be more cognizant of what the fans want. He says, even though it's not in his blood, he might even do an auto-tune record if it became highly requested. I'm going to get my Andy Dufresne on, and write a letter a day, everyday, asking the Chef to cook up an auto-tuned track. Just because.

We salute you, Rae. The new album is fire. Thank you.

ICE CUBE TO PRODUCE RAIDERS DOCUMENTARY FOR ESPN.

This is dope. I know the OG Raiders are from Oakland. I know this. But I grew up in L.A., and that was the SQUAD. Silver and Black. Commitment to excellence. I remember going to games as a little tike back at the Coliseum and having fights between gangbangers and cholos break out in the stands. And I loved it. Apparently so did Ice Cube.

The westcoast rapper will be paying homage to the Los Angeles Raiders by producing a documentary about the team for ESPN. The documentary will be called “Straight Outta L.A.” and will explore the origins of the Raiders from their time as an Oakland-based team, until 1982, when owner Al Davis won a court decision allowing the team to move to Los Angeles. Here's what Cube had to say about his beloved Raiders:

In 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected president, few white kids were listening to Rap and I was an 11-year-old kid in South Central Los Angeles,” Ice Cube said in a statement. “I was into sports and watched as many games as I could on TV—the Lakers, USC Football, UCLA, but I hadn’t developed a connection to any particular football team. But that fall, something clicked as I watched the Oakland Raiders.”

“The music, lyrics and images that I created with N.W.A as a solo artist and as an actor helped turn the Raiders into something more than a football team. It’s been 21 years since we released Straight Outta Compton, but to this day, kids all over the world buy Raiders gear, imitate the “Gangster Rap” style and try to connect with the South Central L.A. vibe that we brought to the masses.”

We salute you, Cube.

LUDACRIS POOL PARTY.

Sometimes this job is really difficult. Like when we have to go to a private party in Malibu hosted by Ludacris, and full of scantily-clad dressed women. Hey, somebody's got to do it. And lucky for you, we're willing to step up. And now, thanks to our self-less desire to make you happy, you get to be part of all the action yourselves.

WESTCOAST WEDNESDAY.

Feel good music got me feeling good. Beautiful song for a beautiful day.

[NEW] Xzibit ft. U-N-I - “So What”

Say word? X-to-the-Z and U-to-the-I on the same track? That's what I'm talking about. Big things poppin for the Inglewood duo. This track is the second release from Cashmere Agency Presents Mr. Grustle & Tha Russian’s Dubstep LA: Embrace The Renaissance Vol. 1 Mixed By Plastician. That's the longest title I've ever seen. And I don't even really know what it means. But the song is crazy. It's some Russian Dubstep, which is evidently some electro-breakbreak type ish. But that's just a guestimation. All I know is Xzibit gets his double time flow on for a sec, and it's pretty gangster. It's safe to say he Pimped The Rhyme...hahaaaaaaa. I know, that wwas bad. But the song is good.

Now that's what I call a commercial. Good job, Rhapsody.

Buckshot (ft. KRS-One) - "How Many MC's" [LIVE]

This is for all of you giving us heat for the Soulja Boy interview. Haha. Here's some real underground grimey, neckbreaking, backpack, silverback rap. Courtesy of the BDI Thug and the Blast Master.

This performance went down at our VIP tent at Rock The Bells. This is some exclusive-type shit right here. Something for the true heads. The real hip hop is over here! KRS and Buckshot's "Survival Skills" drops on Sept 15th. Buy it if you support that real!!!!!

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Chali 2NA

The verbal Herman Munster, Chali 2NA, from the legendary L.A. underground group Jurassic 5 talks about the journey that is going solo. He discusses his main goals in crafting his solo debut, Fish Outta Water, and how he loves tapping into the human aspect of his music and really connecting with fans on a emotional level. I can dig it. Chali also reveals how his son of all people inspired his music. Dope interview.

[NEW] Strong Arm Steady x Madlib - "Get Your Money Right"

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. I've been waiting on this album since Krondon told me about this project about 6 months ago. He let me hear some cuts, and hotdamn, the shit was fire. Especially the song with Phonte. Just you wait. Back then, they didn't even have a title for the project. They were thinking "Mad Steady" but they since scrapped that for "Stoney Jackson." That'll work.

Here's the first preview from the album, courtesy of the Stones Throw Podcast. The project features 16 cuts, all produced by Madlib the bad kid, and features apperances from Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Planet Asia, and the aforementioned Phontigallo from Little Brother.
