Christmas in Hollis

It's not Christmas time until Daryl's momma cooks chicken and collared greens. Merry Christmas to all you hip hop lovers out there.

Let Stacey Dash help keep you warm during the cold winter. I love how this video was shot from the first person perspective. That's pretty creative, Kanye.

FCC Presents: Convinced - "Stockings Stuffers"

Christmas comes early here at the Notorious B.L.O.G. as the homie Convinced plays the role of Santa Claus. He delivers a 13 song goodie bag called "Stocking Stuffers" to help brighten up your holiday. It's all of the previous 2 for 1s Tuesday joints all roled into one nice Christmas wrapping. Spread love, it's the FCC way (C) E-Dub.

[VIDEO] Bambu - "Crooks & Rooks"

Check out the latest video from the homie Bambu. This song is so sick. It appears on his album, Exact Change, which is available now. Bambu is dope because he actually has a message within his music. He has a voice, and chooses to use it in a positive way, instead of preaching nonsense (Rick Ross). If you like this track, and want to learn more about Bambu, peep this interview we did a few months back.

EDIT: Vimeo is frontin on me, go here to watch it.

[NEW] Johnson & Jonson “La La Land” (feat. Be Young)

Johnson and Jonson link up with Be Young from Pac Div for this track that is featured on the Japanese version of their brand new 4 track EP Mama Told Me. If you're not familiar with Johnson & Jonson, it's Blu and Mainframe. If you're not familiar with Blu and Mainframe then you have problems that I just can't help you with.

[NEW] Jay Electronica - "Swagger Jackson's Return"

This guy's level >>> your level.

Jay Elecronica is on some next shit. I'm mesmerized every time I hear something new from him. I'm constantly saying to myself, "how does he think of this." No disrespect to Q-Tip, but this Jay Electronica cat is poetically abstract. That's my word.

[NEW] Gnarls Barkley (ft. Jota Flowers) - "Who's Going To Save My Soul" (Jay Electronica Remix)

Jota Flowers = Jay Electronica.

I don't know how official this is. Something tells me Jay Electronica just spit a verse to this and blasted it out to the internet. Regardless, he murders it. Jay Elect is one of the sickest emcees in the world right now. Look for him to do some amazing things in 2009. The best part of this is you can hear Jay's Blackberry going off during the recording. That's not there on purpose, it's some VH1 Behind the Music type stuff.

[NEW] Souls of Mischief - "Tour Stories"

New Souls of Mischief! No, seriously! It's like a just got into a Delorean, hit 88 MPH and ended up in 1993. I'm loving this joint. Classic. Forever grinding, they give your their perspective from life on the road as independent artists.

Sidebar: It's rumored that Prince Paul is working with the Souls for their new album. That combination might break my iTunes. But that's a chance I'm willing to take...

Happy Birthday Mos Def.

Shine your light for the world to see.

Dante Terrell Smith (aka Mos Def) was born December 11, 1973.

Q-Tip + Prince.

I heard about this near-miracle a few weeks ago. I'm so glad footage surfaced. This was immediately added to my Favorites. It might just be the illest thing ever.

For those who don't know the back story, Prince was chilling at the Q-Tip show at the HOB in Las Vegas. Maybe he was bored, maybe he was inspired, but for whatever reason he decided he wanted to be part of the performance. He proceeded to jump on stage, take the guitar from the guitar player and start rocking. Why? Because he's Prince and because he can. Nothing he does will ever surprise me. Here's the quote from DJ Scratch who was DJing for Tip during the performance:

“Yo, while me and Q-tip were performing “Vivrant Thing” in Vegas last night….this n—a Prince walked out on the stage, took the guitar from our guitar player and just started rocking! None of us knew he was there until he popped up on the stage….then the n—a vanished like Batman, LOL!

The sound crew said Prince was in the balcony watching the show from the very beginning (The balcony was closed off). Then when “Vivrant Thing” came out, he just came backstage and walked out on stage.

None of us knew what was happening, then when we finished the show he was gone LOL!”

I wonder if Q-Tip went back to Prince's crib for homemade pancakes after the show. God, I love hip-hop.

The Story Behind Biggie's "Hypnotize"

Daily Dopeness: Recognized Thresholds of Negative Stress.

File this under: Dope artist from the mid-90's that disappeared from the face of the Earth. Seriously. What the hell happened to the Boogiemonsters? They put out one album as a group in 1994, and the another album in 1997 as a duo after 2 members left the group. Then the disappeared like Jermaine Dupri's hairline.

But you CANNOT front on this joint. This song ran shit in the summer of 1994. Every time it comes on, everyone breaks into the chorus chant: "Da na nuh, da na nuh..." They might not know the song title, the artist, the lyrics, but they know that chorus.

This track is one of my favorite all-time slept on joints. It belongs in Serta Hall of Fame.

Until Tomorrow...

Diddy on the Tonight Show.

Nicole told me about this last night. Diddy sits down next to Jay Leno to sell cologne, Burger King, and then talk about feet. Never a dull minute when Sean Combs is in the building.

[NEW] N.A.S.A. (ft. Kanye West, Santogold & Lykke Li) - "Gifted"

Kanye rapping > Kanye autotuning.

This song would be dope even without Kanye, but his verse solidifies it. The beat is on some Electro Euro-Pop stuff, but it works for me. Sometimes I wanna bounce to that. Don't judge me.

You are probably wondering, "Who the fuck is N.A.S.A.?" Well, N.A.S.A. stands for "North America South America" and they are an international collective of musicians spanning a wide spectrum of musical genres, centered around Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales). They have done crazy collaborations with a bunch of different artists from different genres, like Ol Dirty Bastard, Fatlip, Talib Kweli, Tom Waits, Kool Keith, Talking Heads, Chuck D, and now Kanye West. It's not really hip-hop, but it's far from wack.

Oooooh weeee, this is a heater. This beat is crazy contagious (props to DJ Benzi) and Wale and Ali ride it perfectly. I swear Ali rhymes for like 60 straight bars or something. Ridiculous. Notorious Movie is Diddy Approved.

This is probably really good news. Because I can't front, when I first heard about this movie I was highly skeptical - at best. It seemed like a worse idea than asking Michael Jackson to babysit. Biggie has always been one of my favorite emcees of all time, and essentially, bigger than life. I just assumed you couldn't do Big justice on the Big screen. When they cast an unknown rapper named Gravy to play Biggie, I was skeptical. When they cast a 12 year old as Lil Cease, I was skeptical. When they released the teaser, I was skeptical (Notice how they didn't show ANY acting). But as the reviews started rolling in, I became less and less terrified. People actually liked it. They thought Gravy had Big's nuisances down. They thought it was a good movie. And now this...

Puff Daddy recently told MTV, "truth be told, I was blown away by the movie. I was entertained by the movie. The movie is what was happening. Can't no critics speak on it. I'm telling you, that's my life right there. That's what it was. That's what was happening."

Now he could just be saying that because he's an ego-maniac, and loved seeing himself portrayed on the silver screen. But he was also Biggie's best friend, and if anyone has the right to shit on this movie, it's Puff. Something tells me he's being honest.

"At the end of the movie, it messed me up," Diddy said. "I was messed up for two weeks. It made you miss him in the right way. It made you count your blessings. It's definitely a tear-jerker. It's definitely a movie you're gonna be dancing in, crying in, you're gonna love it. You're gonna wanna see it again."

I'm actually excited to see it now. I'm still curbing my expectations, but I'm definitely going to see it and hope for the best. At least nd you know the soundtrack will be banging. Notorious hits theaters on January 16.

Take that, take that, take that.

Jizz In My Pants.

From SNL this past week. Andy Samberg is a genius when it comes to the digital shorts. This joint had me rolling.

De La Soul - "Itzsoweezee"

Classic De La. Classic Dilla. Classic food fight. Mad cameos in this video.

[NEW] Jay-Z - "BK Anthem" (ft. MC Lyte)

Jay-Z likes Brooklyn. He made a song about it. Like to hear it? Here it goes. This is a world premiere, courtesy of DJ Skee and the Los Angeles Leakers. The beat on this one is gangster. MC Lyte on the hook. There are DJ tags on it, but it's not too annoying.

Kanye Cusses Out Fan In Autotune.

This is funny on multiple levels. Kanye breaks into a freestyle-type tirade after somebody throws a coin at him on stage, but his mic has the auto-tune effect. Imagine if he always sounded like that? I might kill somebody.

New West: Fashawn.

Yesterday, I posted an entry called the New West, which highlighted 5 upcoming Westcoast artists who are making noise in the industry. It linked you to four of the 5 VIBE articles that profiled U-N-I, Diz Gibran,. Shawn Jackson, and Dom Kennedy. Well, today is the fifth and final article from writer Jason Parham. This one focuses of Fresno MC Fashawn who has been carving a name for himself in the blossoming West Coast movement. Fashawn is an HHO fav, and came through the studio a few months back for an interview and live performance. That's right, we saw the future. Now it's your turn. [VIDEO] Kid Cudi - "Day N Nite" (Crookers Mix)

I like the original mix better. This one is a little too housey for me. But it is what it is. The O.G. version is crazy ridiculous. I'll wait for someone to make a YouTube video the original mix over this video. Get on it, internetters.

[NEW] Co$$ (ft. Blu) - "Angelic"

L.A. emcee Co$$ drops a brand new joint on the internets. He teamed up Blu for this one, so you already know you want to listen to it. That's right, trust those instincts...

Here's what he had to say about this one:

A joint i did for my upcoming lp, Before I Awoke, but do to some technical difficulties I couldn’t get everything done that I wanted mix wise, soooo, Im leaking it to you guys early……Blu merced it ofcourse, and I did my thing as usual, haha(at the sake of sounding less than humble, haha)…….go ahead and down load this, knock it, the beat will have you zoning out…..this track will be on my “Co$$ Edition Mixtape” dropping before the lp next year…look out for the KHAKIS AND TAYLORS 12in coming SUPER SOON!!!!(sometime around Jan/Feb ish)

The New West.

U-N-I. Shawn Jackson. Diz Gibran. Dom Kennedy. Say hello to the New West. Gone are the lowriders, drive-bys, and crack raps of the 1980's gangsta rap movement set in motion by artists like N.W.A. There is a new wave of hip-hop representing the Left Coast that is invading the nation and raising the creative bar.

The good people at Vibe magazine have finally realized the dope music that the westcoast, L.A. in particular, have been putting out in the past year. All this week, they are running a whole feature called New West of 5 different, but very fresh Los Angeles acts. Every single one of them has gotten shine on this blog and Hip Hop Official in general. So it's only right that they continue to blaze on. Check out the articles and learn a little something.

New West: U-N-I

New West: Shawn Jackson

New West: Diz Gibran

New West: Dom Kennedy

Check back tomorrow, for Friday's feature.

Eminem - "Number One" (prod by Dr. Dre)

Oh lord. This is dope. I don't know much about this, but this what I do know: It's a brand new Eminem joint. It's produced by Dr. Dre. It's unfinished, and sounds like a reference track. Em is actually spitting Dre's verse on this one, assumably scratch vocals for Dre to get the cadence and flow down so he can go in and record his final verse. It's also rumored that 50 is supposed to appear on the final version. Hearing this is like stepping into the studio with Dre and Em during the recording process. Don't sleep on this one.

Shout out to Illroots for the linkage.

Colbert Humbles Kanye.

Stephen Colbert's Operation: Humble Kanye has worked. If you saw the video, you are familiar with what I mean. A Colbert Christmas didn't hit the top of the iTunes charts, but it is now ahead of Kanye West's 808s and Heartbreaks. A Colbert Christamas currently sits at #3, while 808s and Heartbreak fell to #4. Thanks to you, the people, and of course Stephen Colbert, Kanye West is as humble as he's going to get.

After the Colbert Report video aired, Kanye got wind and responded with a Tritter message, "Who the fuck is Stephen Colbert?" Well Kanye, he's the man who just outsold you on iTunes.

Biggie Smalls and J Dilla Collab?

It almost happened. Watch this video. Right now. Hear it straight from Frank (Frank N’ Dank) and J Dilla as they tell tales of meeting Q-Tip for the first time, fist fights over S950 vs ASR-10 capabilities, and a rare studio session with Notorious B.I.G. that was supposed to feature Busta, but the original never saw the light of day. The verse was later re-used on Biggie's posthumous album, Born Again, for the song Dangerous MC's which was produced by Nottz. Well guess what, I found the song.

It's sad to see Dilla in a wheelchair, but this is still a very important piece of footage. Shout out to FWMJ for the videos. Download the rare original version of the track and then thank the heavens above.

Colin Munroe - "Is The Unsung Hero" (Mixtape)

i had the pleasure of interviewing Colin Munroe last night at his show at the Viper Room in LA. Dude is good people and extremely talented. He played the drums and keyboard at his show. And on top of everything else, he's very humble, which is always refreshing. Anyways, if you've never heard of him, he's a singer, songwriter, and musician from Toronto. He became famous when he did his own rendition of Kanye's "Flashing Lights" which Yeezy actually loved and threw on his blog. He just dropped a new mixtape, which features the likes of Wale, Black Milk, Jeoll Ortiz, Drake, Mickey Factz, and Skyzoo. He's not quite hip-hop, but it's not quite not hip-hop. if you know what I mean. Just download it, it's good music.

Daily Dopeness: Laflaur Leflah Eshkoshka.

Back in the mid-nineties, the Book Camp Clik was putting out some of my favorite music. Between banging album from Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun, O.G.C., and Heltah Skeltah these guys had that grimey, gutter NY rap shit on lock. Heltah's Nocturnal album is a hood classic and the stand out track was always "Laflaur Leflah Eshkoshka." I have no idea what it means, but I like it.

Keys to the City w/ Blu.

25 year old John Barnes, better known as Blu, stands at the forefront of Los Angeles’ new down-to-earth brand of do it yourself hip hop - a rare honest lyricist in a world of throwaway rappers. His ‘07 debut Below The Heavens (produced entirely by Exile) immediately set him apart as a true artist, and new projects this year alongside Ta’Raach and Mainframe (as Johnson&Jonson) have continued to spread the word. Next year will see more collaborations, touring, and Blu’s first true solo project, Godlee Barnes. In this first of his three Keys 2 The City clips, Blu describes the “west coast bubble” that makes up LA’s inclusive hip hop/jazz/rock/soul scene and highlights the musical fusion Cali’s next movement of artists brings to the game.

Biggie Smalls on Martin.

All the way live from 1995. The homie Buddy put me on to this classic episode of Martin starring the late great Biggie Smalls. I barely remember seeing this back in the day. But damn, does it bring back memories. We need more rappers on sitcoms.

So the premise of the as follows: Biggie is in town for a concert, and he's looking for back up singers to go on tour with him. He holds an audition and hilarity ensues. And dsince he's The Notorious B.I.G., he's too famous to stay at a regular hotel, so he stays at Martin's crib while he's in town to avoid the mob of fans. Again, hilarity ensues. Big is a decent actor too. Way better than Bow Wow.

Damn, that was fast. This song dropped yesterday, and now there's already a video. This video was created by Evan Roth of the Graffiti Research Labs. I don't know what it is, but I like it.

Here's Evan's explanation:
“Last week I was contacted to make a video for a new Kanye West produced Jay-Z song for RED & the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa. It launched today (World AIDS Day) at red.msn.com. And while I’m happy to be able to help the cause I’m also more than a little bit excited about getting a chance to make something for the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye. I’ve been turning down client requests to use Typographic Illustration for 5 years in hopes that one day the phone would ring and it would be Hova.”

Good things come to those who wait...

These guys still manage to work the word "business" into every single album title they've had since 1986. I guess they're not playing around.
