What Ever Happened To: The Whoridas?

On this edition of Forgotten Fridays we reminisce over you, Whoridas. The Bay Area rap group, compromised of cousins King Saan and Mr. Taylor, made a splash in 1996 with their street banger, "Shot Callin and Big Ballin" (above), spittin raps about hustlin before it was the norm, encouraged, or even cool. In fact, these cats were the original Clipse. Unfortunately, they didn't have the backing of a Pharrell (but rather Saafir) and pretty much fell off the face of the earth. I guess their pockets didn't really blow up like rockets.

They released 2 albums, the first, Whoridin', being the most notable. Along with "Shot Callin" it also featured the track "Talking About Bank" (you might remember their video did a parody of Pulp Fiction). Their second album, High Times, didn't do much commercially, but had a couple of slappers including "Dock of the Bay." But where are they now? They made an appearance with the Liks in 1997, and haven't released an album since 1999. Their last known appearance was in 2006 on a Mac Dre record. But honestly, who from Oakland hasn't appeared on a Mac Dre song?

They have a MySpace page, but currently only have 288 friends. So maybe you can go on there and help them out by befriending them. If anyone has any more info regarding the whereabouts of the Whoridas, please contact us immediately. We need your help.

Thank you,

Zion I Interview.

The Heroes from the City of Dope talk about their new album The Takeover, which hits stores January 26th. As always they blend the classic hip-hop soul with futuristic electro sounds. Don't sleep on these cats. Amp Live on the beats. Zumbi on the raps.

Below I've included 2 tracks from their upcoming album. Aight.

Zion I - The Search and Seizure Mixtape.

In anticipation for their upcoming album, Zion I present their new mixtape, The Search and Seizure. The concept is dope. The mixtape is a throwback, and actually features 2 sides like tapes did. On the first side, Zion I "Searches" out, and "Seizes" their favorite classic hip hop tracks, and remixes them with their own twist. The B-side has them duo focusing more on an indie/electro sound. With features ranging from Talib Kweli to Santogold, it definitely has a little something for everyone. Zion I's new album, The Take Over, hits stores January 29th. This should hold you over until then...

Souls of Mischief - "93 Til Infinity"

This song needs no introduction. But I'll say this...it was done 15 years ago, and is still doper than ever. And will be dope forever. The song title is on point. no doubt. Dopeness til infinity.

Too $hort - "In The Trunk"

This is one of my favorite Short songs of all time, which is saying something because that brother has a serious catalog. It's from his relatively unpopular album, Shorty the Pimp, which always gets looked over by his classics like Born To Mack, Life Is...Too Short, Cocktails, and Gettin' It.

This song has one of the fonkiest basslines in Oakland history, and Short raps for damn near 4 minutes straight. No hook, no gimmicks, no apologies.

"It's on..."

Unfortunately this is the radio edit, so you don't get to hear Short use his favorite word.
