THROWBACK THURSDAYS.

Primo is a god. He defined an entire sound of an era. If aliens ever came to earth, and you had to explain to them what the hip hop sound was, you'd play them a DJ Premier beat. The bouncy drums, filtered sample chops, scratch hooks - he's the essence of the hip hop sound. And whether you know it or not (or admit it or not) he's influenced ever single producer who's come after him. No question. DJ Premier: Top 5, dead or alive.

Our Artist of the Week, Blaq Poet from the group Screwball blesses HHO with a dope ass live performance of his DJ Premier-produced single, Aint Nuthin Changed. This shit is break-your-neck-type bangin. Peep how Blaq does the self edits on the curse words. Who needs an FCC censor? Blaq Poet love the kids.

Check for the album, The Blaqprint in stores June 30th.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Blaq Poet.

Ya'll remember Screwball, don't you? They dropped an underground classic in 2000 CALLED Y2K that featured the headnodic song "H.O.S.T.Y.L.E." Well, then you also remember Blaq Poet. The fonder of the group returns for his solo effort, The Blaq Print, which drops June 30th. It's street rap at it's finest, and not to mention it's produced by the legendary DJ Premier. How can you front on that? This ain't no playing around here, this is some real grimey-type NY hip-hop.

Blaq took time out of his busy day (he was shooting a music video, and came through on his break) to come through the studios and bless us with an interview and a live performance (coming Friday). He talks about the new album, working with Premo and how he got started spittin back in the day in the Queensbridge. After you watch the interview, listen to the lead single, "Ain't Nuthin Change" which is produced by Premier and sounds like a 1997 neck breaker. I'm lovin it (no McDonals)

MISS MONDAYS.

Bahamadia - "3 Tha Hard Way"

Probably the smoothest voice in hip hop history. But don't let the silky voice fool, she destroyed mics. And you know she was official, her lead single was produced by the one and only DJ Premier.

Royce Da 5'9" x DJ Premier.

Royce talks about his upcoming album that's being executive produced by some DJ named Premier. It's called Street Hop and it's due out July 7th. Wow. The more I think about it, the more I realize how bananas this shit is going to be. Actually, bananas don't due it justice. More like papayas. This shit is gonna be papayas.

Kevin Da 6'1" is excited.

Mass Appeal 2009 Remix.

One of my favorite Gangstarr tracks of all time gets a make over by some of the westcoast's finest crop of new emees: Convinced, El Prez, Shawn Jackson, and Tunji from Inverse. The internets having been waiting for this joint for a long time. The wait is over. The FCC is knocking down doors.

Here's the order:

1. Shawn Jackson
2. Tunji
3. El Prez
4. Convinced

Let the debate begin on who had the best verse...because they are all fire.

Below check out El Prez talking about how the project came together.

DJ Premier Speaks On Nas, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne

Primo knows the deal, straight up and down. When you hear him talk, you can tell that he gets it. He's a fan of hip-hop and been a part of this culture his whole life. Good interview right here.

His idea for the next Nas album = Classic. That needs to happen.

2 Hours of DJ Premier.

Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg plays 2 straight hours of DJ Premier laced joints on his Real Late radio show. This might be the best 2 hours of your entire week. People forget how dope Primo is. This should jar your memory.

WARNING: Individuals with weak or sensitive necks should consult a physician before listening. This is guaranteed to have your head nodding for 120 straight minutes.

[NEW] Ludacris - "M.V.P." (prod by DJ Premier)

Luda teams up with the legendary DJ Premier for this track off his upcoming album, Theater Of The Mind. The album hits stores Monday, Nov 24th and I'm actually excited about this one. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest Luda fan - never have been. But this album is going to be different. He seems really focused and has collaborated with some super dope producers this time around, so I think his sound will be more diverse. Shout out to KNOWxONE for the track.

Daily Dopeness: Come Clean.

A classic underground track. Dj Premier concocted one of the most unique and gutter sounding beats of all time on this one, and Jeru busts his "freaky, freaky...freaky, freaky flow" all over this one. When I first heard this joint I was completely amazed. This beat was perfect for Jeru. I couldn't hear anybody else over this track, so you wack upcoming rappers don't try to touch this one.

A crazy side note, I just noticed the album cover has an image of the World Trade Centers on fire. I never really noticed that before. But I guess it didn't have the same impact back in 1993. It's definitely eerie seeing that now, after knowing what went down on 9/11. Did Jeru The Damaja predict the destruction of the World Trade Center? Not even Nostradamus or Ms. Cleo saw that one coming.

[VIDEO] Smiley The Ghetto Child - The Wake Up Call (prod. by DJ Premier)

The Wake Up Call

If this isn't a Primo beat, I don't know what is...I could tell it was him within the first 2 bars. Classic Premier signature. We need more music like this.

Photos from DJ Premier vs. Pete Rock

From Scifen.

This past Friday April 18th, 2008, marked a historic event in Downtown Los Angeles as two of hip hop's most recognized DJ's and producers were side by side as what was originally billed as "A Legendary DJ Battle." What actually went down was a memorable back and forth set of classic break and hip hop records that kept the crowd rockin'. To finish it off, the last thirty minutes was packed with a three for three mix of classic Primo and Pete Rock tracks that one can only hope was recorded for a mix tape or something. Be sure to look out for some live video clips, I'm sure it will start hitting the net soon...
