[VIDEO] Mayer Hawthorne - "Maybe So, Maybe No"

Mayer Hawthorne is my shit. For real. I love the Doo Wop soul vibe. Creativity and Originality is a lost art these days. Here's a dope video for his track "Maybe So, Maybe No" sot through out L.A., including my favorite party in all the land, the legendary Do Over. His album, A Strange Arrangement drops this Fall and his US tour begins September 5th.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Mayer Hawthorne.

Say hello to Mayer Hawthorne. This dude is creating one of the the most unique buzzes in the hip hop game right now with his fusion of 1960's Motown soul, Do Wop, R&B and a splash of classic break-driven hip-hop. It's so refreshing, because nobody...and I mean NOBODY...is on this steez. Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mayer Hawthorne a.k.a. DJ Haircut a.k.a. Andrew Cohen is making retro soul cool again. Thanks to Peanutbutter Wolf, who signed Mayer to Stonesthrow Records, we will see an album in early Fall.

The lead single, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out" had the internets going crazy, and nobody seemed to know what to think. Everybody was asking the same question: Who is Mayer Hawthorne? Well, we got your answer right here. In the interview, he talks about how the Mayer Hawthorne character came to fruition and discusses where he'd like to see him go.

Thank You Jay Dee, Act 4 (Mixed by J. Rocc)

TURN IT UP! If you don't know about J. Rocc's tribute series to Dilla, then you are failing at life. Do yourself a favor and download this incredible 45 minute mix of Dilla's work, including rare gems, remixes, samples he flipped, and never heard before beats. And then go back and download Act 1, 2, and 3. Of all the cats doing the Dilla tribute, R. Jocc is the illest. Although, Houseshoes may have a good argument.

If you prefer the podcast version to keep in your iTunes, you can go here. While you're there, you should just subscribe to the Stones Throw podcast to say up on all their mixes. Don't be a dummy. It's free. LET'S GO!

Thank You Jay Dee, Act 2 (Mixed by J. Rocc)

This is my favorite of all Dilla tribute mixes. When it comes to Jay Dee mixes, 2 cats stand above the rest. (1) Houseshoes. (2) J. Rocc. Not knocking anybody else, but these dudes are the Official. This classic mix is from 2007, and Stones Throw offered it up as a free podcast, and now it's yours. Please enjoy this, it's a wonderful presentation of Dilla's timeless and classic music. Words cannot really describe how dope Dilla truly was, and how much he gave to our lives.

Jaylib Live 2004.

Gems keep falling from the heavens. Stones Throw just threw up an mp3 of Jaylib's (J Dilla x Madlib) first live performance ever. If that's not enough, they are joined by special guest star, Common. Wow. Talk about historic. Here's the back story on the show, via J. Rocc, the man who was DJing the show:

This is the first show we ever did. It was a party for the release of the Madvillain LP. We didn't practice for the show... or any of them for that matter. I would ask them what they wanted to perform then they would go, “I don't know....you make up the set list”... hahaha.

Well, thank you to Madlib & the Stones Throw Family (Wolf, Jank & Egonavichi) for giving me such an experience. It was a blessing ... Getting to spin for my favorite producers. I remember getting tapes from Jake One of Slum Village and beat tapes and just geeking out with the few homies who knew what time it was. Then I'm getting to d.j. and go on tour with this dude. Man, talk about a dream come true.

MORE INFO:
This was recorded at the Henry Fonda Theater, April 4, 2004, on the first night of the Madvillain/Jaylib tour for Madvillainy. Madlib & J. Rocc had performed Jaylib songs live, but this was the first show with J. Dilla, who had just moved to Los Angeles and joined the tour without being announced on the flyers. Another unannounced guest late into the set was Common. The voices you hear are B+ & Melo-D, who recorded this set.

And while you're listening to this hip hop delicacy, head over to the Stone Throw page to see some photos from the event. Including backstage photos and live on stage.

Raise It Up For Ma' Dukes!

Stones Throw Records has linked up with artist Parra for a t-shirt collab to help raise money for the late J. Dilla's mother, Maureen Yancey a.k.a Ma' Dukes. Mrs. Yancey is currently battling Lupus, the same disease that took Dilla's life in 2006. This is for a great cause, so please help support and cop a fresh tee. I know you all love Dilla. He gave us so much, let's give back something. Go to stonesthrow.com for more info.

[NEW] Madlib (feat. Guilty Simpson) - "Go!"

So one of the most underrated and innovative producers in the game (Madlib) is dropping a new album September 30th titled WLIB AM: King of the Wigflip, and will feature the likes of Guilty Simpson, Murs, Oh No, and J-Rocc. I got a sneak preview of that new hotness right here.

This beat is so sinister the devil himself would have wanted to rip this. Too bad Guilty beat him to it.

Peanut Butter Wolf - Area Codes Mix (The 888 Podcast).

Peanut Butter Wolf is at the forefront of the L.A. music scene. As the CEO of Stones Throw Records, he has his fingerprints on some of the illest music, parties, and trends surrounding the urban subculture of the Mecca of Cool (aka Los Angeles).

This Stones Throw Podcast is the precursor to PB Wolf's 888 Tour.

In Los Angeles, from Aug. 1st til Aug 8th, Peanut Butter Wolf will play 8 straight nights, and 8 different venues, playing 8 different genres - never repeating the same song. He's done this the last three years, first the 666 Tour, and then the 777 Tour last year. These are undeniably some of the best parties in Los Angeles. The twist this year is that Wolf will be VJ'ing the parties - that is, spinning music videos. Let's call this the warmup act: a mixtape of old school rapp from beyond the 5 boroughs, all from different Area Codes. See if your hood is represented...

J Dilla + Ghostface + MF Doom = EPIC.

Holy shit...my boner just got a boner.

These three dudes evidently made music together. Stonesthrow is even more evidently releasing it.

“In late 2005 Ghostface Killa and MF DOOM were both recording over tracks from J Dilla’s instrumental opus, Donuts, which saw release the following February. Some of these were released on Ghostface’s Fishscale in 2006, while others, including a Dilla-Doom project, were postponed indefinitely after J Dilla’s passing. Two of these tracks, “Sniperlite” and “Murder Goons,” will be released digitally, exclusively through Stones Throw’s webstore, due to launch in late June.”

Could you imagine a full Dilla/Doom project? Could my speakers even handle that much dopeness oozing out of one place?

Guilty Simpson - "Beast" (Live)

Detroit's own, Guilty Simpson performs his song "Beast" off this Stray Bullets mixtape, as part of Hip Hop Official's Soundcheck feature.
