[NEW] The Roots - "How I Got Over"

New music from Jimmy Fallon's house band. It's good to hear Black Thought doing his little singing thang that he's been doin on Late Night. This is the first single from their upcoming album, How I Got Over which drops Sept 29th on Def Jam. Is it just me, or is this year full of incredible album releases? Yeah, I thought so.

Beastie Boys x The Roots.

Ad Rock, MCA and Mike D were on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon last night, and you know what happens when rappers appear on that show, right? Hopefully you've been paying attention thus far. The Brooklyn trio perform "So Watcha Want" live with the Roots backing them. This is butter. These guys are older than some of your parents and are STILL killin it.

The Beastie Boys also announced that their upcoming album, the first since 2007’s instrumental effort The Mix-Up, will be titled Hot Sauce Committee. The trio, which has a slew of festival dates lined up this summer, appeared on Jimmy Fallon last night to talk Hot Sauce and the Check Your Head rerelease. They also mentioned that Hot Sauce will be out sometime in September and that parts of the album were recorded on a submarine inside Paul Allen’s yacht. Now that's jiggy.

Rick Ross + The Roots on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon.

The Roots can make anybody sound dope. I'm convinced of that. They're the best thing to happen to late nights since Skinemax and the Subway that's open 24 hours a day by my pad.

The Bawse performs "Magnificent" as Black Thought and Captain Kirk fill in vocals for John Legend's part.

Public Enemy + The Roots on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Jimmy Fallon is the late night king of Hip Hop acts. Anytime you can have the Roots backing you as your band, it's automatically going to be incredible. Whoever decided to hire the Roots as the house band needs a raise. Check out the legendary Public Enemy as they perform "Bring the Noise" live on Jimmy Fallon's show last night on Flavor Flav's birthday.

"Once again, back it's the incredible."

Friday, March 6

Ludacris + The Roots on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon

Ok, this is dope. Jimmy Fallon's show is automatically going to be the most hip hop late night show, just on the strength of The Roots. And it's going to be really fresh if they perform with every musician on the show. They might be on to something here.

Last night, Luda performed "Last Of a Dying Breed" and "And I Do It For Hip Hop" and it sounds pretty good if I do say so myself.

The Roots and Jimmy Fallon "Slow Jam The News"

As you may or may not have know, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon debuted last night on NBC. As you may or may not know, the Roots are Jimmy's house band. Here's a nice little segment they did called "Slow Jam the News." Because everyone sounds better when you have backup singers.

Jimmy Fallon Has the Greatest House Band Of All Time.

It looks like the he rumors were true. I just gained some respect for Jimmy Fallon and NBC. Late night TV + Hip Hop = Freshness.

Jimmy Fallon's Late Night show starts March 3rd.

The Roots Survive Tour Bus Crash.

The Legendary Roots crew were involved in a double-decker tour bus crash, in which the bus flipped completely upside down. The accident occurred while the group was en route to a stop on the Glow in the Dark Tour in Paris. Nobody was seriously injured, and everyone seems to be in good spirits since the crash. ?uestlove even went as far as joking about the incident througha Twitter post on his blog, ""Just wanna be the first celeb to twit... from an ambulance." Questo went on to desscribe the incident:

"In reality the crash was all of about 7 seconds...but to do a 360 on the highway and end up ramped up (the van that crashed into ours was UNDER our double decker bus) in the air....is....well...a frigging miracle."

"My first thought was not move a fucking inch," he continued in the e-mail. "I always had fear that we would fall off a cliff while in high mountain traveling like Denver or Switzerland. I couldn't tell where gravity began and ended."

"... just wanna let everyone know that we are happy to be alive. and not in that tv cliche way....but man......that was divine intervention. we are so grateful for this outcome."

This song is in honor of them...as they continue, to rock the mic

Daily Dopeness: Silent Treatment

People forget how long the Roots have been in the game. The greatest hip-hop band of all time dropped a classic album back in 1994 with Do You Want More ??!? and opened the gates for their organic hip-hop jazz sound. Many people thought it was their first album, but their hard to find, independent album Organix was actually their official debut. Even though "Proceed" put me on to the The Roots, "Silent Treatment" always stood as one of my favorite album cuts. The laid back vibe is perfect for me today...

Nike Air Force 1 + Questlove = Air Questo 1

Nike linked up with Roots member/drummer/producer/sneakerhead Questlove to bring you a brand new exclusive AF1 that drops Aug 1st and will some in 2 different colorways: The regular version coming with a red toe box and one that will be a little bit more specialer.

the shoes will be golden (the one on the right)—them shits are the ones to kill for.

i cant make the “official” announcement on what you will get if you are the lucky ones but lemme just say im gonna stand in line for my own damn shoe.

The kicks with the gold toe box and special limited edition versions, and are extremely rare. Will you be lucky enough to cop the golden pair? You might wanna act like Nelly and cop 2 purrrrrr.

The Roots on "Keys To The City"

The Roots crew talk about their hometown of Philadelphia and their humble beginnings.

All the way live from the 2-1-5. (c) Black Thought

And while we're on the subject of the Roots, let's all watch my favorite all-time video from the Illadelph crew that touches on the evil plague that is repetition, uncreativity (which isn't a real word, but i used my creativity in making it up), and the copy-cat nature of hip hop. Amazing how this video is 12 years old, but most of it still holds up today (more than ever). Some things will never change.

The Roots - "What They Do"

"The principles of true hip-hop have been forsaken,
it's all contractual and about money-making"

[NEW RELEASES] Tues April 29th

It's New Release Tuesday, here's a run down of the new joints you need to run out and cop

The Roots - "Rising Down"

Philly's finest, The Roots drop their eight studio album, Rising Down. Tts their second album on Def Jam, and according to
?uestlove, the album is an electric record, more synthy and the most incendiary and political album of their career, "it's more mature and intense than all of our efforts but not a `downer' as most people expect us to do." Guest features include Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Styles P, and Wale.

9th Wonder & Buckshot - "The Formula"

Hoping to build off their Chemistry, the BDI Buckshot and 9th Wonder head back to the lab up for their second collabo effort titled “The Formula.” Buck rips the mic with his simple yet hypnotic flow, and 9th brings that headnotic soulfulness on the beats. If you havent seen the video for the first single, “Go All Out” staring Charlie Murphy...YouTube that.

Dizzee Rascal - "Maths + English"

And last but not least, straight outta the U.K., Dizzie Rascal's Maths and English hits U.S. shores today. It was released in the U.K. last year, and has been receiving rave reviews from critics around the globe. The trademark abrasive beats and inspired lyrical reportage are still present, making this a definite must have for Dizzee fans.

Bun B - "II Trill"

This was pushed back to May 20.

BONUS: Grand Theft Auto IV

For you gamerheads...the most anticipated game of the year! Throw ya guns in the air. The soundtrack includes Nas, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, and Gang Starr.

The Roots will perform their single "Rising Up" with Wale on the Late Show with David Letterman tonight. Their album, Rising Down is in stores tomorrow. Here's a video to get you in the mood.

PS...this song does NOT appear on the new album. It was pulled last minute because fans didnt embrace it's crossover appeal. You decide.

Black Thought & Malik B. freestyle circa 1994

This freestyle was originally slated as the last track on Rising Down (couldn’t be cleared because we couldn’t track down who the DJ was). Recorded in 1994 at WPFW radio station, peep how young Black Thought sounds.
