The Making of 3 Feet High & Rising.
It was 20 years ago. Can you believe that? Can you even fathom that? This album is older than some of you reading this right now, and it's one of the greatest albums ever.
In the springtime of 1989, three teenagers from Long Island released an album that changed hip hop history forever. You gotta remember, when they dropped this album, it was unlike anything anybody had heard in hip hop at the time. Rap music has an edge. Artists like Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC, and KRS-One reigned supreme. De La ushered in a new style and sound all their own called the "D.A.I.S.E.Y. Age", prompting the masses to call them "hippies" and label their music "alternative." With the success of the album and crossover hit "Me, Myself, and I", De La essentially launched a new jazz-inspired, positive-minded sound to the masses, which we all know as the Native Tongue sound. Although they weren't the first group out the gate (The Jungle Brothers were), they took the Native Tongue sound to new heights, which eventually helped birth groups like A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Queen Latifah, Leaders of the New School (and Busta Rhymes) and the Jungle Brothers.
To celebrate this timeless classic, the good folks at HIPHOP.COM have a nice little feature on the making of the album. They talk to De La Soul's Posdnous and Dave (formerly Trugoy the Dove), the album's producer, their fellow LI school friend and Stetsasonic member, Prince Paul, and some of their golden age contemporaries about the making of this all-time classic. This is a must read for any hip hop fan. And yes, you have to read. It's not a YouTube video. It's not an mp3. It's an article....with words. Remember those?

Suite For Ma Dukes (Finale & Encore)
Don't even get me started at how mad I am for missing this. I had passes for this and was looking forward to it all week. My migraine had other ideas. Here is video from the J Dilla tribute last night called "Suite For Ma Dukes" in which a 40 piece orchestra played Jay Dee music all night. For the encore, Pos from De La and Talib did "Stakes Is High" and they go into "Fall In Love" and "The Official." What an amazing event.

[NEW] De La Soul & J. Period - "Excursions 2009"
"Back in the day when I was a teenager/
Before I had status, and before I had a pager/
You could find the Abstract listening to Hip-Hop/
Pops used to say it reminded him of be-bop."
J. Period links up with De La remake a classic Tribe song. One of my favorite groups remixing another one of my favorite group's favorite songs? How can that be even remotely bad? It can't, that's how. It's better than free pancakes. (Sorry Denny's)

Rock The Bells L.A.
Hip Hop Official was on hand for the Rock The Bells show in Los Angeles San Bernardino this weekend, and let me just say - standing on stage, with Mos Def to my right, and De La to my left, and watching Tribe perform in front of 40,000 screaming fans was one of the sickest events I've ever been a part of. It was historic, and they tore it down. I know most people were there to see Nas, but Tribe was definitely the most memorable part of the show. Believe that.
Here are some photos we took during some of our interviews, but this is just a taste. We'll have about 500+ more photos for you tomorrow, plus interviews and footage from the event on Wednesday. Keep on refreshin.
(We had some skateboards made with the HHO and Rock the Bells logo, as well as the names of every artist on the bill. We had every artist sign them, and will be auctioning them off for charity in the not so distant future, so stay tuned for that.)

Tribe Called Quest - Scenario (Unreleased Version)
This is a true gem right here. This is what hip hop affectionados live for. This, my internet friends, is a rare version of one of the first takes on the classic Tribe song, "Scenario"
You'll notice the beat varies a little, and the lineup is also different. It seems that the whole Native Tongues posse jumped on this including De La Soul, Black Sheep, and L.O.N.S. Here's a little back story from DJ Johnny Juice (who worked with L.O.N.S. and PE):
A Tribe Called Quest was doing ‘Scenario’. It was me, Dinco, Busta, Jarobi was there – everybody was in that motherfucker – Dres from Black Sheep was there, both of ‘em, Chris Lighty, Mase and Pos from De La, all them motherfuckers rhymed on ‘Scenario’. Everybody rhymed on it but Q-Tip, and the best motherfucker on that shit was Posdnuos. He fuckin’ destroyed it, and he ain’t even like the beat! And after he finished rhyming, everybody went back and rewrote their rhymes!
